This quote brings to mind the derailed future of a village, Adeemmra located in the deep interior of Ghana. Children are the future and thus, parents must lay the foundation for them to succeed and Education is a key component of this foundation.

​

Sadly, in a village like Adeemmra, the last thing on a parents mind is education. Parents’ main concern for their children is how to put food on the table. Education is not a priority because of the costs of simple supplies like pens, books, bags, and uniforms. Parents cannot afford to buy these children simple pens or books to go to school let alone, uniforms. From the age of 5, a child is taught to walk an average 9 miles to get a bucket of water or walk 9 to 20 miles to get food from the farm without learning simple ABCD.

This is not a tale; how do I know all this? This is how I grew up. Unfortunately, 16 years have gone by since I left the village of Adeemmra and yet children are still struggling to access the above supplies. It is disheartening to go to a daycare center in the U.S. to see so many books and toys in dumpsters. It is even more depressing to know that thousands of computers and books go to waste in schools when they can be reused elsewhere. Sometimes, I cannot come to terms with the fact that books that are thrown away each month in the U.S. Would be enough for every single child in Ghana for a whole year.
